HoYoverse released a new blog post for Genshin Impact’s known issues in version 3.2, revealing the SMAA anti-aliasing option will return in an upcoming update for the PC version. Version 3.2 removed the SMAA option in favor of FSR 2, but active players on PC cited issues such as severe ghosting, flickering, and stuttering when the option was enabled. Genshin Impact players reported the issue to HoYoverse’s support team, which eventually lead to anti-aliasing becoming one of the game’s currently known issues as of November 3.

In a future update, Genshin Impact will have both SMAA and FSR 2 anti-aliasing options on PC. If desired, players will still be able to turn off anti-aliasing as well. HoYoverse did not reveal which upcoming Genshin Impact update will restore SMAA, but the developer will share more details in future notices. Genshin Impact’s next update, version 3.3, will release in early December.

FSR 2 acts as a temporal anti-aliasing method that also upscales Genshin Impact to fit the native resolution of a user’s display. Since FSR 2 is an open source solution, PC players with Nvidia and Radeon graphics cards may activate the feature within Genshin Impact. Although Genshin Impact is able to upscale the game’s resolution through the use of FSR 2, its implementation is causing visual artifacts and performance issues on PC.

Fortunately, HoYoverse was quick to address the situation with its player base. SMAA ensures Genshin Impact displays a sharp image throughout all instances, so it’s the preferred method for PC players. FSR 2 is a useful upscaling solution that works with a number of popular PC titles such as Cyberpunk 2077 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, but further optimizations needs to be made to ensure compatibility with Genshin Impact.

HoYoverse will likely address more of the game’s known issues in Genshin Impact version 3.3, but a specific timeframe for SMAA is left up to speculation. At the very least, the anti-aliasing issue is one that HoYoverse is aware of and will continue to work on.

Genshin Impact is available now for Android, iOS, PC, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5. A Nintendo Switch version is in development with no confirmed release date.
