N0va Desktop appears to have been around for a while, but version 2.1.1 was recently added to Steam. By default, the app installs a virtual anime girl named Lumi onto one’s desktop, where she goes about her business. However, there are a constantly expanding number of live animated wallpapers featuring popular characters from Genshin Impact.

It may make sense to gamers that N0va Desktop offers significantly less interactivity than an action game like Genshin Impact. However, it appears that the app features very few opportunities to interact with Lumi–or the Genshin Impact characters replacing her–at all. The main draw seems to be the ability to watch a detailed anime model wander around lovingly-rendered surroundings, play with a cat, and wear different outfits. The Genshin Impact live animated wallpapers appear to feature at once more and even less choice for players.
Recent tweets from the verified N0va Desktop Twitter account appear to show glimpses of the live animated wallpapers for characters like the cheerful and irreverent Hu Tao and the playful and bloodthirsty Tartaglia (Childe). Each tweet features a static screenshot from the desktop, a title, and a link to download N0va Desktop for free. Genshin Impact fans can also cut to the chase and just download the static screenshot instead, which does not require an app to function. However, the allure of seeing these iconic characters in motion may be too much for some dedicated fans to resist.
As of writing, it appears that fans have mixed opinions about N0va Desktop, but responses have been generally positive. Several replies stated that the live animated wallpapers available for Genshin Impact characters are gorgeous. This has led some users to request wallpapers featuring more characters, including Shenhe and the Raiden Shogun. The aloof homunculus Albedo is also a highly requested character, as is the vicious but honorable Yaksha Xiao. As miHoYo appears to be regularly adding new wallpapers to the app, these fans’ wishes may soon be granted.
Genshin Impact was released on September 28, 2020, and is available on PC, PlayStation 4, Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 5.
